First grass court win for Musetti
Italy’s youngster celebrates premiere at the BOSS OPEN. Defending champion Berrettini ousted by fellow countryman Sonego.
Young Italian star Lorenzo Musetti advanced to the second round on Monday. The 21-year-old from Carrara celebrated a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory against Croatian qualifier Borna Gojo after initial difficulties. It was Musetti's first ever win on grass in his fifth match.
After nine wins in a row at Stuttgart's Weissenhof, defending champion Matteo Berrettini was already defeated in the first round of the BOSS OPEN 2023. In a 1-6, 2-6 loss to compatriot Lorenzo Sonego, the 27-year-old Roman showed a lack of match practice in his first match after a two-month injury break. Sonego took revenge for last year's quarterfinal defeat at the Weissenhof. The head-to-head score between the two Italians is now 1-1.
Also in the second round is Jiri Lehecka. The Czech took revenge with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over US player Marcos Giron, against whom he had lately lost in three sets in the second round at the French Open.
In the remaining singles matches of the day, Frenchman Richard Gasquet beat American qualifier Christopher Eubanks 7-6 (2), 6-4, while Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, in his last appearance at the BOSS OPEN, eventually lost 6-7 (5), 3-6 after initially putting up a strong fight.
