Matteo Berrettini reaches for the hat-trick at the BOSS OPEN 2023

The Italian is still undefeated at the Weissenhof and is determined to keep it that way! Two-time Stuttgart winner Matteo Berrettini has confirmed his participation in the BOSS OPEN 2023 shortly before Christmas. The next edition of the tournament will take place from June 10th to 18th, 2023.

Matteo Berrettini has a flawless record at the Weissenhof! The Italian celebrated his Stuttgart debut in 2019 with an impressive tournament win, not dropping a single set. During his second appearance in June this year, the right-hander had to go the full distance three times, finally capturing the title with another dramatic 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win in a high-class final against Scotland's Andy Murray. Next year, he will be aiming for the hat-trick and could tie with Rafael Nadal, who is the only player to have won three times at the Weissenhof (2005 & 2007 on clay, 2015 on grass).

This year's triumph was very emotional for Berrettini in two ways. Not only is Berrettini the brand ambassador of the tournament’s title sponsor BOSS, but also, because Stuttgart marked his comeback after a hand surgery which had sidelined him for three months in the spring. Naturally, the man from Rome had to fight tears after converting the match point. “This victory feels even more special than my first success three years ago. It was a mentally tough week, but I kept fighting and now I've won the tournament. This title means a lot to me.”

It goes without saying that he would like to be the BOSS at the Weissenhof again in 2023. And all things point towards a great chance of a “three-peat”. Berrettini is not only 9-0 in Stuttgart, but his overall performance on grass is simply outstanding. Berrettini has not only won the BOSS OPEN twice (2019, 2022), but also the grass court tournament at London’s Queen’s Club (2021, 2022). In 2021, the 26-year-old also stormed into the Wimbledon final. “I have special memories of Stuttgart and feel extremely comfortable at the Weissenhof club. The atmosphere is great, and the fans are very passionate. It will of course be hard to win the tournament a third time, but that's my big goal”, emphasizes Berrettini, whose best world ranking was No.6 in January 2022.

“We are delighted to welcome Matteo Berrettini, an absolute top star, to the BOSS OPEN 2023. He plays highly attractive tennis and thus inspires fans worldwide. In addition, he wants to write the next chapter of his impressive success story in Stuttgart next year”, adds tournament director Edwin Weindorfer.
