Matteo Berrettini wins BOSS OPEN
Italian stays unbeaten in Stuttgart, beats Andy Murray in the finals and crowns himself Weissenhof champion for the second time after 2019.
For the 26-year-old Berrettini, his comeback on the ATP tour after a hand surgery couldn’t have gone better. Against two-times Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, the brand ambassador of new tournament title sponsor BOSS won 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, earning not only the winner’s cheque but also 250 important points for the rankings.
In the first set, Berrettini got an early break which was enough for him to cruise to the set win. In the second set, the 25 year old from Great Britain battled back, saving three break points and capitalizing on his only chance to break his opponent’s serve.
In the decider, the Italian number 2 of the tournament, again capitalized by earning a quick break which he defended until it was 5-3 and Murray served against the match. But Berrettini had other plans, breaking Murray’s serve again to seal the match after 160 minutes of play. Berrettini also benefitted from an ab injury of Murray, which he obviously suffered at the end of the second set, after which he felt pain while serving.
In the doubles, the number 3 seeded pair Hurkacz (POL)/Pavic (CRO) won a tie-break nailbiter against top seeded Puetz (GER)/Venus (NZL) 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5).
