Nick Kyrgios competes in singles and doubles
The field of participants for the ATP tournament from June 4 to 12, 2022 in Stuttgart has grown to include some top-class players! After three-time Grand Slam tournament winner Andy Murray, Nick Kyrgios has now also confirmed his participation in the grass-court event at TC Weissenhof. The eccentric Australian will be competing in both singles and doubles in Stuttgart. Kyrgios comes to Weissenhof as the reigning Australian Open doubles champion after his spectacular triumph alongside his compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis at this year's first Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne.
The "enfant terrible" of the ATP Tour is always a contender for victory due to his strong serve and unorthodox style of play, especially on green surfaces. This was also the case in Stuttgart in 2018, where he only lost to the eventual tournament winner Roger Federer in the tiebreak of the third set in a dramatic semifinal. Kyrgios already demonstrated his qualities on grass in 2014 as a 19-year-old when he reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. In addition, he is the only player besides his compatriot Lleyton Hewitt to have won his first duel with Rafael Nadal (2014 at Wimbledon), Roger Federer (2015 in Madrid) and Novak Djokovic (2017 in Acapulco) respectively.
"I have great memories of Stuttgart, so I'm very excited to come back to Weissenhof this year and hopefully see a lot of tennis fans watching our matches. I hope to be successful and play as many matches as possible to be optimally prepared going into the Grand Slam at Wimbledon," Kyrgios emphasized.
Tournament director Edwin Weindorfer also counts the 26-year-old Australian, who has six ATP singles titles to his name, among the closest favorites at Weissenhof. "Nick Kyrgios is one of the most dazzling players on the ATP Tour, and with his varied game and unpredictability on the court, we can expect anything from him in Stuttgart - not only in singles, but also in doubles," explains Weindorfer.
