Superstar Andy Murray to serve at Stuttgart's Weissenhof in 2022
The organizers of the MercedesCup can come up with an early "present" just three weeks before Christmas! With Scotland's Andy Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion and two-time Olympic champion (2012, 2016) will next year serve at the ATP grass highlight from June 4 to 12 at Stuttgart's Weissenhof.
The qualities of the 34-year-old right-hander on green surfaces are undisputed! In 2012, Murray captured the gold medal at the Olympic tournament held at Wimbledon, he also triumphed at the Grand Slam tournament at Church Road in 2013 and 2016 and entered the winners' list at the ATP grass-court event at London's Queen's Club no less than five times (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016).
The winner of 46 ATP tournaments is fighting his way back step by step after two hip surgeries in 2018 and 2019 and has shown strong rising form towards the end of the past season, as also proven by wins against two top ten players. In Vienna, Murray defeated Poland's Hubert Hurkacz in the opening round, while in Stockholm he gave Italian shooting star Jannik Sinner the slip in the round of 16. "I've been playing a lot of tournaments lately. My body feels good and I'm building more confidence in my game with every match. I'm hitting the balls the way I want to again," the Scot therefore also drew a satisfied balance at the end of the season.
"I always look forward to the grass court season, so next year I will start my preparations for it a little earlier than usual. I'll be playing on grass for the first time in Stuttgart and I'm already very excited about this new experience," said Murray, looking forward to his Stuttgart start full of anticipation.
Stuttgart's green has repeatedly been a good surface for Grand Slam winners in the past. After all, with Rafael Nadal (2015), Dominic Thiem (2016), Roger Federer (2018) and Marin Cilic (2021), no less than four top stars have won the grass tournament at Weissenhof, who also have Grand Slam titles on their CVs. "Andy Murray, along with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, is one of the 'Big Four' who have had a decisive impact on tennis over the past decade and a half. We are delighted that we will be able to present this exceptional player to the Stuttgart audience for the first time next year," emphasizes Tournament Director Edwin Weindorfer.
