This is the entry-list for the Weissenhof 2022
Three-times Grand Slam champion Andy Murray and “enfant terrible” Nick Kyrgios will face stiff competition to kick off the grass court season. German aces Oscar Otte and Daniel Altmaier are guaranteed spots in the main draw of the Weissenhof tournament.
Stuttgart, 17th May 2022. – The ATP tournament at Stuttgart’s The Weissenhof (total financial commitment 769,645 Euro) will once again offer grass court tennis at its highest level. The entry list not only boasts the likes of three-times Grand Slam champion Andy Murray and the ATP tour’s “enfant terrible” Nick Kyrgios, but also no less than two Wimbledon semifinalists from last year: Hubert Hurkacz (POL) and Denis Shapovalov (CAN).
Hubert Hurkacz made headlines in Wimbledon in 2021. On his way to the round of the last four, he beat Daniil Medvedev, topping that result by ousting eight-times Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in the quarterfinals. The current number 13 in the world cruised past Federer in three straight sets, taking the last set by 6-0.
Just like Hurkacz, Canadian Denis Shapovalov reached his first ever Grand Slam semifinal in Wimbledon last year. “Shapo” wore out Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals in five grueling sets, only to be defeated by the world number 1, Novak Djokovic, in the semis in three hard-fought sets.
But The Weissenhof has lots of other interesting players to offer to the fans: Reilly Opelka (USA/Dallas, Houston), Alexander Bublik (KAZ/Montpellier), and Holger Rune (DEN/Munich) have already won ATP tournaments this year, while US youngster Sebastian Korda and Italian shooting star Lorenzo Musetti are counted among some of the most promising NextGen players on the tour.
From a German point of view, the 105th edition of the tournament at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof has Oscar Otte and Daniel Altmaier already with guaranteed spots in the main draw. Otte had an exciting second round match with Andy Murray in Wimbledon last year, in which the Scotsman prevailed in five sets. Since then, the 28-year-old from Cologne steadily rose in the rankings. After reaching the quarterfinals in Belgrade and the semis in Munich he is currently ranked number 60 in the world. Daniel Altmaier is currently ranked number 54 in the world, thus cracking the top 60 for the first time. The 23-year-old from Kempen had his highlight to date in Paris 2020, where he reached the round of the last 16 as a qualifier. Only last week, Altmaier won the Challenger tournament in Heilbronn.
“The entry list for the Weissenhof tournament has everything to offer”, says tournament director Edwin Weindorfer. “There is three-times Grand Slam champion Andy Murray, unpredictable Nick Kyrgios, two Wimbledon semifinalists from last year, as well as an excellent German duo. This will all make for an interesting tournament with exciting matches and first-class grass court tennis.
There are also still three wildcards left. “We will keep these wildcards until shortly before the tournament, so we can react to how the Grand Slam tournament in Paris right before the Weissenhof tournament develops”, Weindorfer explains.
