Draper celebrates maiden tournament victory at the BOSS OPEN
Jack Draper is the winner of the BOSS OPEN 2024. The 22-year-old Brit won a high-class final against Stuttgart specialist Matteo Berrettini 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 and celebrated his first tournament victory on the ATP Tour after two defeats in finals in the past two years.
In the duel between the two best servers of the tournament, the two-time Italian Stuttgart winner Matteo Berrettini set the course for a supposed victory early on. A break to 3-1 was enough for the player from Rome to take the set 6-3.
In the second set, Berrettini proved untouchable for a long time on his own serve. However, when the Briton was up 5-4, he suddenly had two break points and thus set points, which Berrettini was able to save with aplomb. Directly in return, Berrettini also had two break chances on Draper's serve, but he was also unable to capitalize on them. In the tie-break, the up-and-coming Brit managed the decisive mini-break to make it 6-5, and he used the following set point on his own serve to bag the set.
In the third set, Draper left nothing to chance. Although he had to fend off a break point, he then managed to take his opponent's serve to make it 5:3. After that, Draper showed no nerves and served out confidently for his first ever tournament win at ATP level.
"Something very special"
For Draper, winning at Weissenhof fulfilled a childhood dream, as he himself admitted at the award ceremony: "Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to play in front of as many people as possible." The location of his maiden triumph also evoked special emotions in Draper: "Winning here is something very special when I look at the list of past winners." And then, of course, the thanks to the spectators, who once again made the pilgrimage to the Weissenhof in droves on the final Sunday: "Thank you all, your support means a lot to me and I hope that I can come back here very often in the coming years!"
Fair loser
Berrettini was a fair loser at the presentation ceremony: "Congratulations to Jack. It was an incredible week, an incredible match. It was so close and the defeat will hurt for a while, but that's tennis.
Matos/Melo win doubles
The doubles title went to Brazilians Rafael Matos/Marcelo Melo in the first match of the day, who beat the British-American duo Julian Cash/Robert Gaollway 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.
