Musetti and Berrettini advance after thrillers
What a match to kick off the second day in the main draw of the BOSS OPEN. Italy's young star Lorenzo Musetti only converted his eighth match point against France's newcomer Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to win 7-6 (9), 7-6 (9). Matteo Berrettini even had to fight for nearly three hours.
The fans at Stuttgart's Weissenhof were treated to thrilling lawn tennis right at the start on Tuesday. Musetti and Perricard battled it out for more than two hours before the Italian was able to raise his arms to the Stuttgart sky in jubilation.
Perricard, the surprising winner of the ATP 250 tournament in Lyon before the French Open, had his hands full trying to hold his service against the 22-year-old Italian despite his outstanding serve. In total, Perricard had to fend off no fewer than 8 break points. Four of them at 4-5 in the second set were match points for Musetti.
Both tiebreaks turned into real thrillers, with Musetti prevailing 11-9 on both occasions. However, it was only the eighth match point that the Italian was able to convert after 2:02 hours. Musetti will now face the German Dominik Koepfer in the round of 16.
Berrettini wins marathon match
Two-time BOSS OPEN winner Matteo Berrettini had an even tougher fight on his hands as he prevailed 7-6 (8), 5-7, 7-5 against eighth seed Roman Safiullin. Berrettini converted his fourth match point after almost 3 hours.
In the first set, both players did not concede anything on their own serve, but Berrettini ultimately had the better end in the tie-break. In the second set, the Italian began to falter on his own serve and his opponent broke at the decisive moment to take the set 7-5. In the thrilling deciding set, Berrettini had to fend off no fewer than four break chances on his own serve before he got on the offense himself. At 5-4 from Berrettini's point of view, the Italian had his first match point on Safiullin's serve, but his opponent was able to fend it off. At 6-5, the time had come: Safiullin faltered - and fell. Berrettini converted his fourth match point to win the match and advance to the round of 16.
James Duckworth (AUS) defeated Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4, 7-6 (2), while Brandon Nakashima won the US duel against Christopher Eubanks 7-6 (4), 6-4.
