Struff confidently into the round of 16
Last year's German finalist defeats Italian Flavio Cobolli in two sets. Three-time Grand Slam champion and Olympic champion Andy Murray fails to repeat his successful run from 2022.
Like so many matches that day, the match between the 21-year-old Cobolli and the 34-year-old Warsteiner went to a tie-break in the first set. Neither player had conceded a break point in the opening set. Struff had his first two break points in the tiebreak at 6-4, but Cobolli won three points in a row and was just one point away from winning the set. Struff kept his nerve and won the tiebreak 9-7.
Everything went for the German from the start in the second set. Struff immediately took the service from his opponent to take a 1-0 lead and then didn't let up on his own service. In the end it was a 7-6 (7), 6-3 victory. Impressive: Struff didn't concede a single break point in the entire match. Struff will meet Frenchman Rinderknech in the round of 16.
Murray falls to Giron
In 2022, Sir Andy Murray stormed through to the final of the BOSS OPEN, but in 2024, the Scotsman was already eliminated in the first round. He lost to American Marcos Giron 3-6, 4-6.
Giron managed the decisive break in the first set at 4-2, after which he continued to serve with ease and converted his second set point. In the second set, Murray had the chance to swing the momentum right in the beginning. However, Giron was able to fend off two break points and then got the break for a 2-1 lead, which he easily played home. After 75 minutes, Giron converted his first match point. He will now face Jack Draper from Great Britain in the second round.
Murray took the defeat in stride: “My service is just not there at the moment. I still have a lot of work to do if I want to win matches again. In general, I've been struggling the last few weeks and the level on the tour is just so high at the moment."
Rinderknech and Shapovalov also through
Also in the round of 16: Arthur Rinderknech (FRA), who eliminated the American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 7-5 and Canadian Denis Shapovalov, who was in the competition thanks to a wild card. He prevailed 7-6 (5), 7-5 against French qualifier Matteo Martineau.
