Star line-up guarantees spectacular grass court tennis
Three superstars from the top ten of the world rankings and six more aces from the top 16 have signed up for the BOSS OPEN. Two main draw wildcards have been awarded to the German Jan-Lennard Struff and Brazilian youngster Joao Fonseca.
The strongest player field in years is led by world No. 2 Alexander Zverev. Alongside the German crowd favorite, U.S. star and BOSS brand ambassador Taylor Fritz (ATP No. 4), and Italian Lorenzo Musetti (ATP No. 9), who has had an outstanding start to the current season, will also be competing—bringing three top ten players to the BOSS OPEN 2025.
Behind this trio, there is no shortage of high-caliber contenders—such as American stars Tommy Paul (ATP No. 12), Ben Shelton (ATP No. 13), and Frances Tiafoe (ATP No. 16), all of whom are well-suited to perform on Stuttgart’s grass. Tiafoe already etched his name into the BOSS OPEN’s history books by winning a memorable final thriller against Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in 2023.
The current list of eight seeded players also includes Canadian standouts Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov. After falling short in two Stuttgart finals—against Matteo Berrettini (ITA) in 2019 and Marin Cilic (CRO) in 2021—Auger-Aliassime will be aiming for his long-awaited first title at the Weissenhof. And Shapovalov’s affinity for grass courts has been well-known since his run to the Wimbledon semifinals in 2021.
Tournament Director Edwin Weindorfer has meanwhile awarded the first two main draw wildcards to Jan-Lennard Struff and Brazilian super talent Joao Fonseca. “Struffi has a huge fanbase in Stuttgart and has always been a great supporter of the tournament. So there was no doubt that he would receive a wildcard,” emphasized Weindorfer. Germany’s rising star Justin Engel will also be part of the action at Weissenhof, either in the qualifying draw or the main draw, thanks to a wildcard.
Joao Fonseca will make his Stuttgart debut this year! The 2024 ATP Next Gen Finals champion sparked memories of his idol and Brazilian legend Gustavo Kuerten with his tournament win in Buenos Aires (ARG) in February. “Joao Fonseca is one of the hottest young prospects on the ATP Tour. Wherever he plays, he electrifies the fans—and that will be no different at the BOSS OPEN,” Weindorfer is convinced. The 18-year-old Fonseca is expected to play his first match in Stuttgart on Super Tuesday (Tuesday, June 10).
Also among the top favorites at the Weissenhof is two-time tournament winner Matteo Berrettini (2019, 2022). The BOSS brand ambassador came close to completing a Stuttgart hat trick last year, but after winning the first set, he ultimately lost in a high-class final to Britain’s Jack Draper in three sets. Anyone who knows Berrettini knows he’ll be hungry to finish what he started last season.
There’s good news from Nick Kyrgios as well! The Australian "enfant terrible," recently sidelined by injury, is currently on track for a comeback at the BOSS OPEN. In addition, French fan favorite Gael Monfils will return to Stuttgart’s Weissenhof in June to delight the crowds once again.
